LAAHU is All About Education

EDUCATION

Programs are designed for new agents as well as veterans and are presented at monthly meetings, special events such as our annual sales conference and Continuing Education day.
As a licensed agent in California you are required to obtain continuing education credits on a bi-annual basis in most instances.

LAAHU generally offers at least 30 continuing education credits per year at minimal costs. If there is a subject of particular interest to you, please contact the current committee chair to share your request.

To Obtain a License and/or Check License Status:

Information on how to obtain a Life and Disability license is available on the California Department of Insurance Website at www.insurance.ca.gov .

New licensees must complete twenty-five (25) continuing education credits for each of the first four years. After the first four years, the licensee will need to complete thirty (30) continuing education credits every two years. Eight (8) of the credits must be based on ethics.

Agents who want to sell Long Term Care products must complete additional courses.

Professional Designations

  • RHU: Registered Health Underwriter
  • REBC Registered Employee Benefits Consultant

The RHU program was founded in 1978 by the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU).

The objectives of the three course program are:
·                    To raise the professional standards of health insurance agents.
·                    To improve the methods involved in the sale and service of health insurance by giving recognition to those whom, by passing suitable examinations and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct, have demonstrated a high level of competency and ethical fitness for the sale and service of health insurance.
·                    To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles, practices, related disciplines and laws governing and affecting the sale and service of health insurance.
·                    To encourage a continuing program of education and professional development and activities.
·                    To demonstrate to the health insurance industry and to the general public NAHU’s concern for accountability of sales and service practices.

During the 1980’s NAHU developed the REBC program for those who specialized in employee benefits. In 1994, the RHU/REBC program was sold to The American College to become a part of the college’s nationally recognized professional designation program. NAHU is still actively involved in the promotion and sale of the RHU/REBC study programs and encourages their members to seek out these programs.

The Registered Employee Benefits Consultant (REBC) designation includes a comprehensive five course program. Three of the courses can be obtained via the RHU designation.
